The History and Influence of Survival Horror

ag_halloween2

Halloween is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than to take a look at the history and influence of the survival horror genre. The genre has undoubtedly had its ups and downs over the past couple decades, but things are currently looking about as good for the genre as they have since its golden age.

Developing games with the intent to scare people has been around since the early 80′s. Games like Mystery House and Haunted House were some of the first games to try and instill fear in players by putting them in the shoes of characters who were weak in comparison to the enemies they faced.

Deadly Premonition Getting A Directors Cut in Q1 2013

deadly premonition

You can’t see me right now, but I assure you I am doing a happy dance in the middle of my house after hearing the best news of the week so far. Rising Star Games has announced that they plan to release a Directors Cut of the cult hit Deadly Premonition on PS3 in early 2013. However, no specific release date was given.

The Directors Cut will feature new scenarios, HD graphics, updated controls, and DLC. Although not everyone on our staff is able to grasp the game’s brilliance (I’m looking at you Mike) I am still eagerly awaiting the release of this Directors Cut nonetheless.

Cliff Bleszinski Leaves Epic Games

Cliff Bleszinski

Epic Games Co-Founder and Design Director Cliff Bleszinski has announced that he is leaving the company that he has been a part of for 20 years. It appears that Bleszinski is just burnt out and needs some time away from the industry. Below is an excerpt from the letter he wrote to his colleagues.

“I’ve been doing this since I was a teenager, and outside of my sabbatical last year, I have been going non-stop. I literally grew up in this business, as Mike [Capps] likes to say. And now that I’m grown up, it’s time for a much needed break.”

Bleszinski has been a long time staple in the video game industry, having worked on several high profile games over his long career with Epic Games. He has also never had a problem making his opinion known on certain topics, often resulting in his being labeled one of the most outspoken developers in the industry.

It is not yet known what Bleszinski plans to do now that he wont be with Epic Games anymore, but whatever his future endeavors may be, we here at A-G wish him the best of luck.
