Despite Peter’s fantastic PS3 review of Final Fantasy XIII-2 and his generous four star rating, there is absolutely no disputing the fact that Final Fantasy just ain’t what it used to be. That lustrous magical aura has since metamorphosed into something more akin to rust over the past generation. Gamers used to look forward to a new release of a Final Fantasy game like it was an event, a gaming holiday if you will. The stark reality is; Square Enix has lost touch with what makes Final Fantasy so special to so many gamers who have been with the series since the beginning or the ones who jumped on when Final Fantasy VII made the JRPG a mainstream staple in gaming. Many gamers just don’t look at a new Final Fantasy with the same reverence as games past, and one could argue that Square Enix just doesn’t treat it with that same reverence.

For the majority of recent memory, Square Enix’s coveted Final Fantasy franchise has been the subject (or, victim?) of some rather heated debates and a largely split fanbase. There are many who have long cried for a return to the series’ roots and refuse to swear by any other entry in the series other than Final Fantasy VI or VII. Each new entry for them is held up to impossibly high standards, both wrongfully and rightfully so. There are others who’ve moved forward with the series and their lives, accepting each new entry as just that: a new entry in a line of games that have little to do with each other besides spells ending in “aga”, giant birds called Chocobos and a man named Cid. Then, there are others who are new to the series, and others who prefer to spend their time naysaying on forums and comment boards (like a vast majority of the internet gaming community).

Final Fantasy XIII-2 Demo Impressions

Square Enix has some making up to do. Final Fantasy XIII was nothing like what we hardcore JRPG fans wanted, but I understand the bind they are in. Final Fantasy games have been selling by name only for quite a while now. The core games have been anywhere from average to great while the spin-offs and fringe games (such as Crystal Chronicles or Final Fantasy XI and XIV) have been anything but the smashing successes Square Enix was known for in the past. It seems their credit with fans has run dry.

This time around though, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is no mere spin-off. It is a sequel, taking place three years later, to the conflicting Final Fantasy XIII, our first multiplatform experience. Unfortunately for many, including myself, it left a bitter taste by the time we were done with it. The main story was short, especially for a Final Fantasy game, unless you chose to work towards a 100% completion in which probably 75% of your time is grinding and completing trials. Much of the first one-third to half of the game felt like it was on autopilot, a linear path not unlike many a first person shooter nowadays. It felt like Square Enix was trying to come up with some amalgam Western/Japanese RPG that just didn’t quite work out.

How will the sequel stand up?

Final Fantasy XIII-2 The Moogle Trailer

If there’s one thing that can fix the Final Fantasy series, it has to be Moogles right? Square Enix released a new trailer detailing the uses of the cutesy, lovable Mog in Final Fantasy XIII-2. Not only can he…she…it(?) become a weapon, but you can force it to hunt for treasure and even throw it to reach treasure you can’t get to. Moogle rights activists are in an uproar, but a Moogle has to earn it’s keep. I mean, we feed them, clothe them, and give them shelter. They have to have some use other than looking cute and cuddly. Unleash your Mog on Jan. 31st, 2012.

New Final Fantasy XIII-2 Trailer

Final Fantasy XIII-2

It has all the trappings of a classic JRPG. Pretentious dialogue, androgynous characters, and Moogles! It looks like the player gets involved more in the combat which is a big improvement for me over Final Fantasy XIII. The other would have to be the linear gameplay. That looks to see some improvement as well, according to Motomu Toriyama in an interview with IGN. I’m hopeful for FFXIII-2 though. JRPGs are dying out and fans are starved, aren’t they Nintendo?

Final Fantasy XIII-2 is slated for release in January of 2012 for PS3 and Xbox 360
