Gears of War: Judgment Review – The jury’s out on the latest entry in the Gears series

Gears of War Judgment

Publisher:  Microsoft Studios
Developer: Epic Games & People Can Fly
Platform:  Xbox 360
Release Date: March 19th 2013
ESRB: M- Mature

The question “did we really need another Gears game this generation?” has probably floated around in most gamers heads since Judgment’s announcement at last year’s E3 but the prequel to the ever-popular Gears of War series shows there’s some life in the old dog just yet.

Gears of War, like Call of Duty and arguably Halo, is never really about the multiplayer so it is refreshing to see the campaign move towards a multiplayer-based structure with the emphasis on co-op and scoring. As a result, the narrative suffers immensely. There is no real plot or goal to Baird and company’s travels across Halvo but it by stripping back the previously convoluted narrative, People Can Fly have been able to concentrate on the fluidity of the gameplay and the sheer satisfaction that comes from shooting Locust. The game is extremely short though. Most will be able to breeze through in around six hours which is disappointing.

Gears of War Judgment Gameplay Video Reveals Class Based Overrun

Gears of War Judgment

Gears of War Judgment made its world premiere with the E3 trailer. Now the world gets to see a little bit of gameplay.

The goal for Epic Games is to provide a prequel story featuring a younger Lt. Baird and Cole Train in Kilo Squad. The gameplay is supposed to be more open and less scripted.

The video also reveals Overrun which is essentially a class based Horde style of game known as Overrun. Gears play defense and Locust attack. The COGs have engineers, medics, scouts, or soldiers. These classes will be familiar to some gamers as engineers will be the fortification repairers, medics will be the healers, able to throw stim-gas grenades and revive teammates, scouts can climb areas for sniping and throw tag grenades, and soldiers will be able to drop ammo and carry boomshots. Horde players can control Tickers, Wretches, Grenadiers, Kantus, Bloodmount, Corpsers, Maulers, and Serapedes. They also will have their own special abilities such as Kantus healing or burrowing with Corpsers.

Now you’ve got your Horde and Beast modes in one.

Gears of War: Judgment Revealed

Gears of War Judgment

Despite previous statements that the new Gears of War game wouldn’t be revealed until Monday, Game Informer has went ahead and shown off the cover images for their new issue and revealed the name of the title, Gears of War: Judgment. There are two different covers, with the only difference being who is pictured in handcuffs, with one cover showing Augustus “Cole  Train” Cole and the other showing Damon Baird. No details have yet been revealed, but the safe money would be on the game being a prequel, as both characters seem to look younger than they did in the original Gears of War.

The full reveal will take place on Monday, June 4th at 12:30 PM ET/ 9:30 AM PT during Microsoft’s E3 press conference.
