Nintendo Direct April 2013 Recap – Year of the Luigi, EarthBound to VC, New & Old Zeldas

Nintendo broadcasted it’s Nintendo Direct video updating gamers on future plans across various platforms today. Satoru Iwata, Global President of Nintendo, called this year the “Year of Luigi” with some Luigi focused gaming in the Super Mario Bros. series.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team is to be released on August 11 on the 3DS. The 3DS features are utilized to incorporate all new battle styles that take place in both the real world that requires cooperation with the brothers and Luigi’s dream world that can involve many Luigi’s helping Mario advance through levels.

Luigi will also be the focus of a New Super Mario Bros. U DLC. New Super Luigi U will take advantage of Luigi’s characteristics like being able to jump higher than Mario. The DLC is scheduled for a summer release.

Also announced were a new entries for Mario Party and Yoshi’s Island on the 3DS. Iwata also revealed Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move for the 3DS eShop. It is a puzzle game where the player will guide Mario or Donkey Kong to the end of each stage. Expect to create stages and upload them or download other user created stages.

Pikmin 3 finally got a release date, August 4.

Following up on the recent Pikachu 3DS XL system, there is a new Animal Crossing 3DS XL system coming.

Capcom’s Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons will hit the eShop on May 30.

Square Enix’s Bravely Default: Flying Fairy might be one of the more bizarre names for their RPGs, but it is coming to 3DS. Sometime in 2014. Yikes. The concept of skipping a turn in battle to have a chance to do more damage in later rounds is very intriguing. Also added to the 2014 roster is Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy for 3DS.

Shin Megami Tensei IV for 3DS hits July 16 and Atlus has revealed the first shipment to include plenty of swag. How does a 176-page Strategy & Design Book, which features the starter guide and a range of artwork, a soundtrack that covers the breadth of the SMT series, and a slipcase with key art by Atlus graphic artist Masayuki Doi grab you?

Forget everything you just read. This is the big news. EarthBound is coming to Wii U Virtual Console by the end of the year.

Okay, maybe this news tidbit might be a tad bigger. Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO of Nintendo of America, Inc. dropped a Legend of Zelda bomb on us. A new Legend of Zelda taking place in the A Link to the Past world. The 3D display will be used to show depth in environments. You will also be able to turn into a “paper” Link to walk along walls, adding a new “dimension” to solving puzzles.
