Christmas time is a period of cheer, warmth, love, family and the perfect breeding ground for memories that can last a lifetime. For myself, no other holiday quite gives me the same feeling in my heart as Christmas – it is, without a doubt, my favorite time of year. For years, Christmas morning has always been filled with the anticipation of what might come in those shiny, beautifully wrapped presents sitting underneath the tree and the burning hope that a cellophane-encased bundle of gaming bliss would be contained therein. For some reason, no other video game-related Christmas gift jumps out in my sugar plum memories than winter, 1998, when one of my gifts from ol’ St. Nick was Square’s Xenogears. Since the first time that I played the demo for this wonderful title, packaged in with the company’s other blockbuster hit Parasite Eve, there was no containing the excitement for Xenogear’s eventual release. RPGs, specifically Japanese RPGs, were what I grew up on and were what helped to solidly shape my personal gaming identity, and the strong connection that I established with Xenogears was no exception.
