What makes a game or level spooky? Is it the monsters you face?  Or the environment?  Maybe the screams of the dying?  Those are all major factors, but another very significant factor is often the music that plays in the background.  Just like in movies, music can make or break a scene by creating a certain type of mood.  In this case, a spooky mood.

We’ve singled out the spookiest game soundtracks we could find, and included videos for your listening pleasure.  Be warned:  some of them are not the best thing to listen to alone or in the dark.

First In-Game Screenshots of The Last of Us

The Last of Us

Little is known about Naughty Dog’s PS3-exclusive zombie-adventure game, The Last of Us. The announcement trailer showed the two protagonist, Joel and Ellie, scavenging through an old, dilapidated building in search of anything to help along their survival. And while the trailer – running on in-game assets and the engine – gave us a general idea of the environment, the characters, and the narrative, it delivered few specifics and wasn’t actually a cinematic set to be in the finished game (only for trailer purposes).

Well, Game Informer Magazine has posted three new in-game screens from their upcoming cover story of The Last of Us, set to grace the March issue. Below, you can find those screenshots, and just on the off chance you’ve never heard of The Last of Us, the announcement trailer, too.

The year was 2007. Highly regarded as one of the best years for contemporary gaming, it should come as no surprise then that the Uncharted series made its debut that fall alongside other incredibly successful releases such as the highly anticipated Halo 3 and the new IPs Mass Effect, Assassin’s Creed, and Bioshock. Coming up against some strong competition, Drake’s Fortune was flying low on most peoples’ radars as it was an exclusive title for Sony’s Playstation 3 which only launched a year prior and had yet to sport the strong library it has today. Fortunately Uncharted proved to be quite the hit with gamers and critics alike. What had once been jokingly referred to as “Dude Raider” busted out onto the gaming scene with production values, scenery, a narrative, and an extremely vivid cast of characters that rivaled most Hollywood blockbusters. Not long after the game’s release developer Naughty Dog (Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter) knew they had created yet another gaming iconNathan Drake.
